a few seconds of hope
by J.J. Campbell
sometimes when i wake
up in the morning i look
out the window and see
the rabbits playing in the
backyard

it makes me wonder

are the coyotes dying
out or are they simply
saddled with apathy

other mornings,
when i don't see
the rabbits i smile

believe all is right
with the world

of course, that's
before the morning
paper and the tv
comes on

nothing wrong with
allowing a groggy
fool a few seconds
of hope i suppose
