the great equalizer
by Jack T. Marlowe
when i was younger
i used to say that god
made stupid people

so the rest of us
could feel better
about ourselves

and

it was good for a laugh
at the time

but

when middle age
sneaks up and
sucker punches you

the knuckles of time
smashing
into your mouth
give you a little taste
of mortality

and

you don't feel
so smart any more
when the reality hits you

that

once we're horizontal
beneath the St. Augustine
we'll all be stupid
in our silence

the one blessed
difference
between now and then
being that no one
ever
has to tell the dead
to shut the hell up.
