Because it is Pretty and Sad
by William Taylor Jr.
Glancing out the window of the train
I realize I've all but missed
my favorite month

in the city the seasons
exist only in name

and the days and weeks are streamlined grey

but now October trees
all bright orange brown
and crazy yellow

pass by in a parade
of colors I'd all but forgotten

and here
outside this window
is my America

miles of chain link fences
protecting overgrown yards
and bus depots

parks

where kids play ball
and families watch
half bored

outdoor parties with food and balloons
and drugstore masks

a pretty woman on a metal bench
reading a book and twirling
her hair

junkyards
piles of metal
and plastic that once were cars

signs saying things like
Redwood City
and Stay Behind the Yellow Line

worldly possessions
stuffed in shopping carts

vast fields strewn with litter

satellite dishes on old shingled roofs

little red wagons and
donut shops

strip malls and endless parking lots
smoke from backyard grills

brown and grey boxlike buildings
where people live their lives
as best they know

it all appears then is gone
so quickly there is no time
to dwell much upon
the meaning

but to see and to remember is enough

I wear my headphones
and play the same song
again and again

because it is pretty
and sad

the train moves on and the feeling
is pleasant and
all I know is I don't want to
be anywhere.
