Bus Stop Girl Gaggle
by Kenneth P. Gurney
I was struck second
by their nail polish,
its neon glow in the dusk,
how it drew my eyes
away from the nipples
protruding through
their flimsy, cotton tank-tops.

Some of them asked for bars
to hide behind, but two
pressed their faces into the wind
to feel their hair flutter,
not caring if it was perfect.

One seemed to hang limp,
limbs over the bench, deathlike—
makeup clotted on her face,
the blues of her exaggerated eyeshadow
clashed with the closing sky.

One, mostly ignored by the others,
had the look of a dog
happy to be taken along for the ride,
always moving her head
to get a better view, nose to the wind.

She watched me watch them
for a moment, waved, shrugged her shoulders,
then focused on the long street for the bus
and the progress of adventure
it promised.
