dear friends of mine that join me on this day
by F.D. Marcel
I.
a dozen bugs
watch me drink
not that I mind
company.
but I wonder
how they all
found their way in;
I suspect
the openings
between the
A/C and the
window. They
have wings but they'd
rather not fly &
I can relate.
I'll kill them all
eventually but
until then, we
share the space.
all our chances
of survival
dwindling.

II.
a thousand bugs,
diamond-shaped,
each day a new one
find its place on the windowsill
or between the cracks
of the air conditioner
& after I found
one of them still alive,
thought to be dead,
I began
scraping them into
an old bottle of vodka
with enough left
at the bottom
for all of them
to have a good time
before their crowd surges
& they turn on each other
& build atomic bombs
to clear the slate.

tomorrow, I'll start to
name them.

III.
a million bugs
come for
everything I've got
in a blanket of clattering bodies
on plaster wasteland
ignoring the smashed corpses
of their predecessors
like a funeral march
over a million years
of minimal evolution
sitting cross-legged
under the blackout-shade Bodhi tree,
there is nothing here
for these scavengers,
& I have no choice
but to deputize them
& toss them shotguns
& we'll
take back the world
from pretty people
& butterflies.

optimism.
