| bent over
like a badly hammered nail. he's walking laps on the tenth of a mile track at the ymca. his left hand bobs slowly on and off the silver metal railing separating us from a twenty foot drop to the basketball court. hows it going? i ask pulling up even during my warm-up jog. there's no human recognition in his eyes. he says something unintelligible in a voice that sounds like dragonfly wings and keeps following his hand. after lifting weights i pop my head in there. he's still at it. what's with the guy on the track? i ask at the desk on my way out. oh that's fujimo, she says in a low voice and tells me his mom drops him off four hours a day so she doesn't have to deal with him. is that legal? i ask. we checked with dhs there's nothing we can do, she says and goes back to folding towels. isn't dhs for kids? i ask. yea he's only thirteen, she says checking over her shoulder before dipping in close and whispering he's lucky though cause she watched on the news how most of THOSE people kill off mistakes like that. |
