Laughing
by Tony O'Neill
when I was in rehab
they told me I had to
stay away from drugs:
"they're killing you!
"you have one foot in
"the afterlife already!"
it was true:
I didn't look so healthy.

on TV they tell you
drugs make you unattractive
antisocial, send you to jail,
wear you down,
"look at this hollowed out
eaten up face, after just
5 years of meth use!"

what they don't tell you
is how human relationships age you
every 7am argument
every long silence
every screaming and crying
and threatening suicide
evening produces
one more gray hair
causes one more shuffled footstep
towards the abyss.
no-one in rehab
warned me of this.

almost a decade on
from that first trip to treatment
and life
is pretty good

I still take drugs most days
I still live with
2 crazy women whose love
hooks me worse
than any dope habit
I've ever known

I still kiss and scream
and laugh and nod
with the same recklessness
and passion as ever

yes;

I'm still
looking death
in the face
and laughing
