well groomed man no taller than a barber's chair stood in back smiling like a serial killer the whole time. afterward he bought my book asked me to sign it. i asked how he'd heard of the reading. oh in the newspaper, he said shyly voice like fish oil dripping onto tin-foil. the ted bundy smile was still plastered on his face: i swear i saw a monkey-paw in the back-pocket of his jeans but he quickly reached back pushing whatever it was back down. you're probably more interesting than the people i'm about to have drinks with, i wrote in the book-jacket shook his hand & told him: never lose that smile. it splits atoms. |
