| In Portugal I buy a brown
leather jacket for my passport Divorcing myself from the navy blue plastic that announces my marriage to a country murdering people for political purposes In Spain I turn my San Francisco sweatshirt inside out Avoid long conversations with locals In Italy I work on a Canadian accent And don't ask for Catsup in cafes In Mexico Sergio Witz Rodriguez has been arrested for writing a poem that images his country's flag as a rag A replacement for toilet paper Metaphors that provoke a fine and prison in the mind of Mexico's Supreme Court In London I read the guilty verdict Lay The Morning Star on Starbuck's table Go into the room where I reverse my sweatshirt And return to write a poem on the front page of Oxford Street about the felonies that stain freedom |
