My Grandfather's Garage
by Chris Middleman
I'd watched enough PBS
by age 10 to be made
uncomfortable by the
Nixon portrait hanging there,

torn from an issue of Time,
tacked on a cabinet with
magnets long loosed from
their decorative plastic shells

that were mementoes of state
landmarks and roadside attractions
While unfit for refrigerator display,
they were fine holding up a proud portrait

of an unphotogenic man whose values
must earn your respect once you've
spent your early 20s far from home, roasting
on the tarmac of some Brazilian airfield
