Weekly checkups
by Lena Judith Drake
She dies as regular as a clock and
as steady as the day is long. She smokes
on the balcony, verbal fences, chokes.
Disdainful cadence, drips from her sweat gland.

She walks around like a dead man, back hand,
all tongue, teeth, and sandpapered knees. She strokes
his thigh, glycerin cubes in mouth. Provokes
only more words, and her lungs full of sand.

The garbage can is overflowing in
the sink under the cabinet, and she
presses holes in the plaster with the tips
of her toes. Floor stains. Drips from bathtub gin.
Too much. She knows it's very bourgeoisie.
Knotting hair and grime. Three steps and she trips.
