Rasta Jesus
by Jared Ward
hanging on our wall
beneath clear plastic,
surrounded by a cheap black frame,
he held his hands out,
palms crayola peach, open.

a rainbow grew like a halo
in his wake,
black skin completing the spectrum.

from the very first moment he perfected the room
and I can still see tony’s face
disgusted by the very thought,
as if vision taints blood and somehow
he’d been infected with an ebony virus.

white people are funny sometimes…

…four a.m. on a sunday,
sleep lurking around sunrise,
alone with jesus in a roomful of friends
probably alone with jesus.

he sighs at my question,
pulls me close and I feel
his strong arms around my shoulders,
heart beating against my cheek,
the oily scent of dreadlocks and sweat
filling my nose and I breathe
it in deeply.

nothing in words,
but my eyelashes fluttering
on his white linen shirt whisper
i wish my god were as cool as you…
