Poetry Makes the Best Bathroom Books
by Richard M. O'Donnell
Poetry makes the best bathroom books.  It’s short, easy to put down and deals with the essence of life.  No other room so clearly reflects our own fundamental nature, or demands so much of our attention.  It’s more relentless than a lover, more basic than sin, and many of us are destined to die there, yet it’s the least appreciated room in literature.  You may pretend it doesn’t matter, but I’d rather the paramedics say, “Look, he was reading Sylvia Plath” then notice I was partially eaten by my cats.  But decide for yourself what legacy to leave.  Elvis drowned in his own vomit.  As for me, I’m convinced the toilet is the best place for most poetry, so I keep mine just above the flush.
