This Absence Smells Like a Landfill.
by Andrew Rihn
A crumbled Wendy’s bag
that no one bothers to clean up,
day old french fries crawling out like
fat greased worms,
like the maggots that press
and bulge the thin flesh of roadkill.
There are no footpaths or bus stops,
I can only walk near the guardrails.
I never know which side to keep on:
weeds on the one hand
cars on the other,
a thrill near the curves
where it looks like the cars might
just speed right over me,
mow me down along with the dandelion stems
that click on my shoes as I walk,
sounding like untied laces
and spreading their seeds.
None of the drivers will notice the smell
from inside their little glass cages
bottlenecked at the stoplight,
reminding me of Laura’s glass menagerie
and all the silly daily things
we do to survive.
