Breath is a Scam
by Daniel C. Porder
Shadows crisscross my ceiling
like chain-mail. I’m drifting
in the dark, toes bent
against an AC’s breath.
The day’s colors outran me
to the horizon. The stars
glow like teeth, like a frown.
I set the music low, twist
bagpipes through my brains.
My eyes flutter and I blink
postcards of a dream, of Venus
stamped onto space’s page
like a period. I hear the cosmos
combusting wads of hair
and space slamming
through the roof. I close down
my eyes and unplug my mind.
I’m on the floor, praying
for the Earth to stop.
