| when I was growing up
the neighborhood kids would all come over to my house and we'd fight each other in the yard. I remember one kid got his face smashed up against the front fender of my mom's 1987 Suburban. If you lost, you could sit out. but if you won, you had to fight everyone. some days I just lost as soon as I could, sit back and watch the other kids bleed while I sipped on a cold glass of Tang. we were stupid, bored kids and we didn't need video games when we had dirt, and heat, and knuckles. One of those kids (he's no kid anymore) lives in the same city as me. I see him from time to time, riding his bicycle down Congress Ave. there's another that I see maybe once or twice a year. he looks different every time I see him. he's a mean old son-of-a-bitch. he'll tell me stories about fat, nasty girls he'd fucked tell it to me right there in front of his old lady. she doesn't say a thing. I hear he has a mean back-hand. and I've seen him punch. felt it too. his dad passed away, recently. (a good old guy) I meant to call him and tell him I was sorry. but I never did. I'm sure he knows that I know and we were never ones for hugs and tears. maybe we both have a little more growing up to do. |
