The Undertaste
by M. P. Powers
i am with a smalltime orchid
thief and a dealer whose face reminds
me of the floor
of a gas-station bathroom
we are sitting beneath
the dangling of a nude
bulb in a small dark room
off mcnabb
credit card on the table
ashtray brooding our souls
smoke travels the air like a sleek blue
cat and suddenly
a door opens in the hallway
some brutal fat guy with stretchmarks
on his arms
and a youngish latino
whore whose
hips
plead yes
no please poppy nada nil this
room emits a dark
and poisonous
sadness
as they kiss
and my eyes are drawn to a spider
waltzing
ever so silently
along the windowsill, the first
noble creature
i've seen all
night
