***BIO*** James Babbs still lives and dies a little each day in the same small town where he grew up.  He works for the government but doesn’t like to talk about it.  He likes getting drunk and writing and sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference because both of them can be very intoxicating.  He doesn’t like okra and never did but he could eat lima beans every day of the week.  James has recently had work in Abbey, Gutter Eloquence, Fight These Bastards, Opium Poetry, and Song of the San Joaquin Quarterly.

A Beautiful Girl With the Middle Name Blanche
by James Babbs
her first name was Charwin
I met her back in college
she was friends with another guy
who lived on the same floor as me
she kept showing up at the same parties I did
and it was easy for me
to talk to her about nothing
after drinking several cups of beer
one night I told her
I thought she had a really beautiful name
a beautiful name
for a beautiful girl
I said
and she said
her middle name was Blanche
I said
you didn’t hear that name much anymore
it was one of those old names
like Hortense or Gertrude
I told her
I had an Aunt Blanche
but she died in a fire when I was young
Charwin said
it was a family name
she had a great-grandmother with that name
and a second cousin on her mother’s side
then she leaned over
letting her long beautiful hair
hang down in front of her face
and threw up all over my shoes
