Heart of the city
by Ivan Jenson
Their skid row romance
of wine and dimes
junk food dates
from the dollar
menus
unshaved laughter
oily hair and
finger nails of soot
somehow started
when they found each-other
on the streets
on the dole
and she will soon
be a baby’s mama
and he not wanting
to be a deadbeat
dad
found them a half way
house
where they can raise
the kid
on food stamps
and a panhandler's
salary
just another
hard luck
love story
bitter sweet
as whiskey
in the afternoon
