the poet isn't getting any younger,
and the poems aren't getting any better
by Kristi Swadley
I've got the beginnings of carpal tunnel
syndrome in my right hand, pin prick
sensation centered in my pinkie with
my ring finger catching on, trembles and weird
jerking movements, too much mouse clicking
and scrolling and typing
a friend cracks wise about extra curricular
activity abuse

he's a smart ass and somewhat
right

I was outside trying to read a colleague's book
I'm to write a review for but my eyes blur
too much comp time

I need glasses (no comment
from you C.J. – I'm warning you!)
so I'm sitting out there eyes blurring the words
a corn chip stuck in my throat (just fucking brilliant!)
knowing there's nothing left to do but get off the stairs
listen to my knees crunch and ankles pop

I'm no longer feeling old soul-wise but body-wise, too
that's bad when you're turning only 28 this year
and did I mention I'm writing this in longhand
as my comp is being used much like I am
right now writing this in a painful scrawl but
the words came and wouldn't leave and insisted
I write, so here I am and there you are wondering
what the hell this poem is about
