Remaining Second Chair
by Casey Mezera
No guilt subsides
while sitting at an imitation wooden plank
beneath the accumulation
thinking of the times that work
has taken second chair
to the images and inspirations
that can fill a piece of script

Nothing gets published
even if it did
it wouldn’t pay what work does
No food would be put on the table
No clothes on my children’s back
No house to protect us
Just fifty cents a copy
and a chance to be heard

So I sit here
wondering
Should I get off my ass and work
or write another page that
may never get seen
Another page that may never feel breath
from a women eating her lunch
by a fountain
taking time away from work
reading a piece of script
