My Life in Pictures
by Emily Stueven
Every picture of a wall
I ever drew as a child
I drew a mouse door
A small opening rounded at the top.

Now when I have occasion to draw a mouse
I put him in a top hat and bow tie.

I draw cats and dogs and pigs.
I attempted a parrot that came out a penguin
Which was a pleasant surprise.

I can draw a spider on her string and a turtle in a birthday hat.

I drew so many pictures of Snoopy.  Snoopy and his family.
I made him a wife and kids and the pictures were photographs.

Now I draw something that looks like Gumby on accident
And I’m amongst children who have no idea who Gumby is
And suddenly I’m the old person in the room.

It happens again with Smurfs.

The children line up to have me draw turtles in birthday hats
And bow tied mice for their parents.
One points a finger at me accusingly and says
“You are the greatest artist ever” to which I say
“Just wait until you see an actual good artist—your head will probably explode.”
