The Machine
by Alfaro
This is the machine
that answers your phone
cooks your food
washes your clothes
records your voice,
types.

This is the machine
that makes ice cream.

This is the machine
that made men fly.

This is the machine
that propels bullets.

A tree
leaves
leaves
made of sheet metal
that replicate
photosynthesis
all along the
hot
black
pavement
wires course through
the silver trunk
Electricity
imitates sap.
The branches sway
robotically.

There is no wind.
There is no life.
There is a mechanical rustle.
This is second nature.

This is the machine that enslaves you.
