| a little birdie told me I wasn't getting any pussy, anyway |

| on my annual trip back home to Hammond, Indiana I accompanied my brother, Pete to his Thursday night league two minutes loitering around the lanes reminded me why I despise bowling and I excused myself to the bar where top 40s music muffled the clash of ten pins and the drunken roars of poorly dressed fat guys nursing a Coors along the mahogany helped me realize just how out of place a white cowboy hat, shoulder length mullet, tight jeans and ostrich skin cowboy boots could be in a suburban bowling alley "you're not from around here are you?" the attractive brunette bartender asked I noticed bleakly she wore a Travis Tritt T-shirt and a wedding ring I hate country music "What gives you that idea?" I countered, considering I was born and lived over half my life just down the street but Alabama living makes foreigners of us all "oh, I don't know; a little birdie told me" there's something about the cutesy smart ass way she said those words that irked the hell out of me "why don't you tell that little birdie to shut the fuck up and mind its own goddam business" the words came out a lot harsher than I intended before I could change the subject she walked to the other end of the bar and pretended to watch television, ignoring my calls for more Coors after a few moments of tapping my fingers against the empty bottle I returned to my brother's lane where I watched him chuck the same ball at the same pins over and over again |
