THE THIEF
by Lisa LaTourette-Pershan
I walk on living streets vibrant, pounding collective heartbeat throbbing from underground and I walk hungry, limbs like wires stomach collapsed; it presses, drawn like a magnet to my spine with each shallow breath. The small back-eyed man turns his head and I steal an orange from his cart, hurry away on my skeleton legs. I grip its heavy roundness like something holy. With grubby fingers and grateful hands I try and break the skin while the ocean churns in my mouth and belly. Finally, I tear with my teeth rip through tough orange leather that protects the sweet velvet juice, the tart and pulpy flesh. Its yellow juice burns, runs little rivers through my dry, cracked lips down my chin and the startled bones in my neck. I walk on living streets, asphalt pumping underfoot, fortified by the nourishing sweetness of that orange, and even the bees stay away.
