OLD WOMAN
by Lisa LaTourette-Pershan
I see her when I'm walking to my car, being pushed by a bored & indifferent nurse with Broadway baby eyes and marked meaty flesh; She's in a smooth metal wheelchair, glinting & winking in the sun, her jaw hangs slack like a dead bird, flower petal paper skin wrinkled as a walnut, holding the memories of vibrant-eyed youth and first love within its many folds & creases; Her hands, cool and religious in her lap, and I see the way her pale lips lift into a smile when the breeze ruffles her hair, and I know she sees me & wonders at the unfairness of old age & the curious melancholy of youth.
