***BIO*** Colin Galbraith is 30, and lives in Edinburgh with his wife and child. After gaining a Degree in I.T. in 1995, he started working in a typically mundane job within the confines of the 'rat race' - which he is now trying to claw his way back out of. He started writing seriously four years ago after completing a course with the Open College of the Arts, and is currently working on his first novel, several short stories and the occasional poem. Most recently his short story 'Once A Borderer' was published by 'This Is It' magazine.

Missing Out
by Colin Galbraith
Birds twitter early morn',
A fresh dawn brings new hope,
The sun growing ever warmer,
Rising into the blue.

Snail trails left overnight,
Sticky, shimmering on the ground,
Close warmth replacing dew,
Mist lifting over the fields.

The heat releases new life,
And insects float through the air,
Chasing pollen amongst the green,
Roses bloom in all their colours.

And all the while, here I sit,
Looking out this darkened window,
Cheap varnish and fake air,
Nothing ever changes here.

Self-satisfied grins of the rat-race,
Fill these spaces with their ego,
No light shines within this tunnel,
All life temporary on hold.
