Mercy
by Joseph Veronneau
Crawling to the side of the road,
its hind legs stretched beyond repair,
the cat insists on making it to
the green grass just five-feet ahead.
We pondered what to do, my sister and I,
at first thinking to leave it,
then grabbing the beach towel
folded in the back seat.
We swaddled it like baby Jesus
in his manger.
When we arrived at the police station,
a cop offered to unload a few rounds
into it.
As we headed back onto
the road, making our way through
tourists and college kids, my sister
turned to me and said “that damn cat”
and we both laughed
to stop the silence-

our need to hear something.
