| and I’d come home
after 8 hours of neon and she’d be knocked out from working the night shift she slept light because her dad had beat her up once and me saying “wake up” was enough to do the trick but she took her time in the process twisting into the sheets hair spreading on the pillow hot and orange tomato soup “baby,” she’d say all tired-like “I’m sleeping” I’d stand in front of her hopping from one foot to the other wringing my hands “I know you’re sleeping but the day what a day I had and I need somebody to do something with and if it can’t be you then I’m going to feel like things are working seriously against me” it worked every time and she’d get up and we’d drink beers at the bowling alley across the street or fight in front of some ethnic restaurant downtown or we’d go steal some ice cream from the gas station and then we’d come back to our place she’d get into bed and I’d come in with her and sometimes we slept and sometimes not it wasn’t for a few years that she got a job with different hours and I’d be coming home doing the nervous-hop saying “baby, baby I need you” and she wouldn’t be sleeping any more she’d be awake and she’d say “I’m watching the simpsons can you wait until it’s over?” and it was maybe the third or fourth time we saw that one where they had to build Bart’s soapbox racer that I knew the happiest days of my life were over |
