Counting Frogs
by David Chorlton
The mysterious vanishing
of frogs continues
while we sleep. Each morning
we wake up on a planet with fewer
croaks. We examine the water

where they splash and plop,
holding it to the light
to test for clarity
and find our own fingerprints
where we parted it

to place poisons
and pretend be rid of them.
Some frogs disappear

a piece at a time; first
they are born with one leg
then with none
until only their eyes are left
with an incriminating stare.
