***BIO*** Amanda Oaks lives in State College, PA. She will be relocating soon, destination, as of now, unknown. She is peppered around the small press- places like Nerve Cowboy, My Favorite Bullet and remark. She runs words dance (http://www.wordsdance.com) - an online zine that just recently turned print and is published sporadically throughout the year. She, shamelessly, just made her first chapbook available on the site. Order a chap, an issue - read the back issues – send her work when submissions are open - make her happy.

slurred and obtuse
by Amanda Oaks
we sat at the table
acoustic night at the bluest bar in town
arguing about genetics playing a part in destiny
i thought it was ridiculous
and proceeded to sit down,
stand up to sit down again
demonstrating our right
of free will
and then
i shifted my weight to the bar
to get a drink, waiting and thinking
about the alcoholism
that drips from the branches
stemming
from my family tree

and how
when you are gone tomorrow
i will find myself
talking to the cat
reasoning with him
like a child
becoming more and more
like my mother
with each passing day
