an act of god
by George Anderson
you think you know
about knowing
about certitude
you even use the awkward
arrival of some religious fanatics
at your front door
to demonstrate your simple vision of life

I ask the nice clean-cut, excessively verbal bloke:
‘Do you ever have doubts about who you are, what you represent or what you are doing?’
he shakes his head

a top the staircase
hugely smiling
that vacant brow
shredding
contemplating
discarding
smiling once again-

‘I know the truth’, he proclaims

A sense of oblivion returns
with all its wicked and senseless refrains telling me it’s all crap every fucking moment of it!

He suddenly
slips down the raw
half finished stairs
       his bones viciously
            snapping

a retched horrifying scream-
surely,
ironically

an act of god
