| Cleansing |
| by Uche Peter Umez |
| The rains have emptied their bowels and yielded
to the sultry strength of October. The azure sky is pure like a soul after confession. What remains of the drizzle is licked by the building heat that damps the skin and warms the buds of thirst. You easily notice the gutters are still clogged with waste and the streets strewn with sachets, cans, ragged bits, even after the gushy reign of rains; but we commemorate in flourish the 44th birthday of a black nation, its historic split from white shackles; and filth still thrives here and there, stubbornly like corruption yeasting in oligarchic clique; so much cleansing stalls in this land. |
