ZYGOTE IN MY COFFEE.COM

I have read and reread Debbie Kirk's fourth chapbook "Bleeding From My Psalms" I had read many of the poems when they were first published online.
Debbie is young (32) and her talent is obvious. She seems to have experienced much pain and suffering in her life and you can feel the intensity of it when you read her poems.

In the short time I have been reading her I have noticed more confidence in her poems and growing maturity as a writer which I hope she never stops doing. Though I have a feeling she couldn't stop if she wanted to.
To quote from one poem "If I had a dick, I'd tell Van Gogh to suck it" I give you this:
"
art isn't in museums
it's the spilled ashtray
covering your skull and crossbones
braclet with resin

art is not on the walls
art is the walls
walls
with their simple imperfections
stains
and stories...
"

another poem that stands out in many ways is "I listened to Nirvana the whole time I wrote this poem" from which I quote:
"
sometimes when I catch him looking at me
I hold my breath

instead of sucking in my tummy
to look hot in my bikini
I try to suck in my insanity
and we can stay this way forever.
"

My complaints about this chapbook are minimal. I wish that when Kirk uses the word "typer" she would use quotation marks since she is using Bukowski's term for a typewriter. A poet she has been heavily influenced by.

I also hope that as she continues to grow as a poet we see more humor in her poems and the ability to use it to show just how absurd life is. Which  she does in the poem "Who says I have no life?"

A note to the publisher (Hand Print Press) who did a pretty damn good job I might add. Putting black lettering on red (which was only done with two poems) is tough to read for those of us who are color blind!

That said, I highly recommend reading this chapbook and future poems from Kirk's "typer."
