things they never talk about
by Ronan Barbour
you know
I once saw the strangest thing
at St. Martin's Private Catholic
elementary school.

mrs. Ratucchi was having us do
some reading in our workbooks
and we had thirty minutes to complete
the assignment.
I was bored
and didn't want to look around the room
at all the other students
any longer
so I raised my hand and asked
miss 'Tucchi if I could go
to the bathroom.
she told me to be quick
and to make sure
that Yo-Han
the little chinese boy
who had been excused
to the bathroom
ten minutes ago, was all right.
I left the classroom and walked
down the hall.
stopped outside the door
of the boy's bathroom to take a drink
from the water fountain
and then walked in.

inside
the air was warm
and smelled like poop.
on the ground
were many white trails of toilet paper
zigzagging all over the place
and
all the sinks were running water
but no one was there.
then I heard someone laughing
from behind one of the stalls
in a long row
to my right.
I walked over to the first stall
and looked under it
and saw somebody crawling
away from me
on their hands and knees
without any pants and underwear.

it was Yo-Han, the little chinese boy.
I don't know where his pants went
but I saw him crawling from stall to stall
flushing each toilet
laughing and laughing
and laughing:
hee-hee-hee
hee-hee-hee
hee-hee-hee...

but I didn't think it was very funny.
