YOUTH
by Michael Dean Odin Pollock
         we snuck out at night
          crawling out windows
          across roofs
          dropping to the ground
          the only sound
          boots
          colliding with pavement
          in the dark hot
          silent summer night
          a car
          sat in waiting
          just around the corner
          we drove the barren streets
          until the sun
          showed its face
          peering out over
          lake michigan
          dazed
          scattered
          across the grass
          cringing
          retreating
          like vampires
          back to our
          suburban coffins
          back home
          diving into dreams
          before
          the factory whistles blow
          the church bells
          the school bells ring
          rude alarm clocks
          tearing
          citizens
          out of their nests
          dumping them back
          into the raging rivers
          of so called civilization
