RECOVERY PARADOX
by Lisa LaTourette-Pershan
I remember you:
sweet thunder rolling
in my belly.

One more time,
let me walk the pulsing
jungle streets, that stink
of car exhaust & blood,
trade meaningless green paper
for something of value;
Trade myself, in small
increments, payments
of a diseased & rotten
soul
like poker chips,
bits that break off easily but leave you
full of holes & missing
pieces.

Just once more,
I want to bury the needle
into the landmark hole
in my skin,
a permanent pock-mark
on the roadmap of veins
that cross like tree branches
on the porcelain white sky
inside my arm.

Sweet amber
liquid lollipop dream,
I need to feel
the warmth
of your beating heart
spread through my
lungs, liver, intestines;
blind my eyes from
the haze of distant
foggy melancholy,
filling me overflowing,
mother nursing child.

Once more,
though I tremble &
quiver with want,
I turn away from you,
smoking black ruins
of my memory,

For although my love for you
runs deep,
my hatred runs deeper.
