(Lights out) *** Scene 6 “Yes, Dr Pretentious” June, 2002. Outside high school. Bare stage, except for blanket on which the characters sit during the scene. JOSEPH sits eating an apple, although he is 18 during this scene he is played by the same actor who plays him in the present day scenes. In a formal suit with the tie undone. KAREN (18) enters from stage left. She is wearing an evening gown similar to that Mona bought for herself in Scene 5. SHE is holding her recently won high school diploma. JOSEPH shakes HER hand as she sits down on the grass next to him. Karen: I remember you used to kiss me when we saw each other. Joseph: I’ve been watching you up there this whole time, I didn’t feel the need for it. Karen: Well, it would’ve been nice, today is a big day for me. (JOSEPH leans over and kisses HER) Karen: Better. Not great, but better. Joseph: You’d prefer to lay back and do it here in the bushes? Karen: Would have been romantic. Joseph: (points to diploma) What’s that say? Karen: I haven’t read it, I’d assume it’s pretty simple. Aren’t you gonna congratulate me? Joseph: For what? It’s pretty easy to graduate from High School. Karen: You didn’t graduate. Joseph: Hard to do, seeing how I never went to class in a year, and I’m not enrolled. Are you gonna suggest it’s my fault my father’s dead? Karen: No. How’s your mom? Joseph: She’s alright. I think she might take a trip or something. Maybe down south. She needs to clear her head, I guess. She’s still pretty screwed up, even now.. Karen: Well, her husband did just recently die. Joseph: She’ll get over it. Karen: And after all that sickness. Joseph: Yeah, well, you make do. Karen: And you? Joseph: (looks smiling at her) I’ll find a way through. Karen: Did quitting school help any? Joseph: (bites apple) You know, I can’t decide if you’re being playful or just a bitch. |
