A Southern-Fried Sonnet
by Ben Prescott
Oh so many times in drunken splendor
Have I seen, in roaring stadiums full
Of raging fans screaming for a food vendor,
A shattered slammed car buck like mad frenzied bull
At the deafening impact of a another car
As fine powdery dirt is thrown in the air
And seen with adrenaline a big new star
Emerge in this grand destructive fair
That we call the derby of destruction
Down here south of the Mason-Dixie Line
It’s good for mechanics and car production
Companies and makers of beer- cheap, not fine-
Cause when I’m here my consumption of booze
Always increases when my hero will lose
