I Like This Place
by Misti Rainwater-Lites
Martha Stewart is on tv talking to Larry King
I can’t hear her and I’m glad
it’s bad enough that I have to see her
so I look away
usually I avoid eye contact with strangers when doing laundry
here alone
I don’t know what I’m afraid of with my wild
fuck if I care hair and stained wrinkled pants
and thrift store sweater
I fit in
maybe the notebook makes me stand out a little
but here we are
the poor ass people who don’t have our own
washers and dryers at home
crowded together in conversation and stare and stink
like cockroaches rats evacuees
good thing we’re in the high desert
if we were on the Gulf Coast during a particularly bad hurricane
we’d be screwed
just spent my last three dollars on one load of laundry
went outside to be alone
was found by a girl who asked me if I was cold
saw me through the window thought I was a reflection
of herself
she’s just driving through with her boyfriend
they’re from Illinois
but they just left Arizona
later I see an A.G. Edwards commercial on tv
a man is bathing an enormous egg
I smile and think That Makes A Shitload of Sense
I don’t get it
I don’t get a lot
but I like this place
this place will do
