fine dining in bubba-land
by Jack T. Marlowe
fat elbows support
the porcine torso
as it hunches over
a heaping plate
of barbecue and sides

the hulking frame,
shrinkwrapped
with a dingy white
wifebeater shirt,
pulls back
from the table
for a moment

one giant paw wiping
congealed brown sauce
from slobbering jaw
the other scratching
the sweat-dank recess
of a soap-starved armpit
before returning
to the chore
of shovelling more slop
into the boorish snout.

all the while,
i can't stop staring

despite
the gut instinct
to regurgitate

kinda like staring
at a fatality
on the freeway

despite
the gut instinct
to take the first
available exit.

i cut my meal short,
sparing myself the trouble
of a few more pounds to lose—

and what a relief
that i didn't
lose my lunch.
