Karaoke Girl
by Steve Barker
She sings karaoke
In Chinatown
On weeknights
From ABBA to Blondie
Poison to Queen
To Michael Jackson
She dresses like 1958
Has bangs like Betty Paige
Her hips say she never went to prom
And her star tattoos says
Her first kiss was at 21

That’s ten years behind her
Now she sips whiskey
Sings Bohemian Rhapsody
And dances and cheers
For everybody
Even those miles from the right key

She follows guys like me
Out for cigarettes
She tells me it’s my turn to get on stage
And doesn’t hear it when I say I’m no good
First thought is Betty’s hitting on me
When I got Marilyn at home
But she’s not interested in a boy like me
She loves Johnny
Depp and Cash
She writes them love letters
That never get sent
Stained with whiskey and tears

She doesn’t take no for an answer and drags me on stage
We sing Robert Palmer “Addicted to Love”
She makes me dance with her and doesn’t laugh
When my voice cracks
And I don’t care about the three other people
Eating noodles and drinking Sapporos

The song ends I buy her a Whiskey and Coke
And she promises to get the next round
Then she’s called up to the stage
The MC turns down the light
As if this has happened a million times before
The music starts and the world is hers
