out of season
by Jack T. Marlowe
the weather in Texas
is unpredictable
and often
unseasonable--
kind of like
the women here.

within
the past month
i got hit
by a cold front:
two lovely ladies
said
i reminded them
of their fathers

which might be
flattering

if it didn't
make me feel
like the fading
emerald lawn
beneath
the cottonwoods
grasping
at the waning
warmth of summer

while someone
well-intentioned
prematurely announces
the first day of winter.

on the other hand
old Jack Frost
probably
wouldn't mind
too much

if a fine young
snow maiden
with an
Elektra complex

saw fit to sit
in his lap
and call him
"Daddy."
